Our Platform

Early on in the development of PDH, following the lead of former progressive activist and columnist, we created our “platform” of issues we support and work on. In the March 2006 issue of The Progressive magazine, Molly commented:

As usual, the Democrats have forty good issues on their side and want to run on thirty-nine of them.

At the time, she suggested three: stop the Iraq war, establish a single-payer system of health care, and publicly finance elections. We thought this was a good idea and we took it upon ourselves to create a platform of specific issues to address. Originally we had five (I guess we couldn’t stick to just the three):

Stop the war
Healthcare for all
Impeach Bush & Cheney
Publicly financed elections
Sustainable environment

And so our SHIPS platform was born.

In the wake of the collapse of the financial system in 2008 and the ensuing “great recession,” we modified our platform:

Stop the war
Healthcare for all
Accountability for elected official
Publicly financed elections
Economic justice
Sustainable environment

SHIPS became SHAPES. We have since created expanded documents to “flesh out” our SHAPES platform to both generate discussion and to shed a little light on why we think these issues are so important.
