From S.H.I.P.S. to S.H.A.P.E.S.

In the March 2006 issue of The Progressive, the remarkable Molly Ivins published one of her memorable columns, Enough of the D.C. Dems, in which she chastised Democrats,

“As usual, the Democrats have forty good issues on their side and want to run on thirty-nine of them.”

Her solution?

“Here are three they should stick to:

1) Iraq is making terrorism worse; it’s a breeding ground. We need to extricate ourselves as soon as possible. We are not helping the Iraqis by staying.

2) Full public financing of campaigns so as to drive the moneylenders from the halls of Washington.

3) Single-payer health insurance.”

I took her suggestion to PDH, adding one more item: Impeach Bush and Cheney! I also arranged these 4 items into a handy acronym S.H.I.P.:

Stop the War!

Health care for all!

Impeach Bush and Cheney!

Public financing of elections

Rachel Orange wanted to add one more item: Sustainable Environment. This seemed good to everyone, so the PDH platform became S.H.I.P.S.

It turned out that the national office of Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) adopted a very similar set of priorities.

Now that the Bush administration has retired from office, the Impeachment plank seems obsolete. The PDA working group on impeachment decided to change its focus from impeachment to Accountability and Justice.

And with the collapse of the economy, that seemed an important new area of focus, as well. Consequently, at our February 5 meeting, I proposed that we change our platform from S.H.I.P.S. to S.H.A.P.E.S.:

Stop the War!

Health care for all!

and Justice

Public financing of elections

Economic Justice

Sustainable Environment

This modification is very similar to the national PDA priorities. What I plan to do is to present our platform (today), and then each plank of the platform (in the days to come), outlining how the PDH platform relates to the PDA priorities, and linking PDA “Issue Organizing Teams” (IOTs) for each. The relevant PDH blog pages will be tagged. We also have a blog devoted to the PDH Platform in general

Here is the brief outline:

Stop the War!

Impeach Bush & Cheney—/ Accountability and Justice

Public financing of elections

Economic justice

Sustainable environment/Stop Global Warming

If one of these planks interests you, or is your main priority, feel free to join the PDA “IOT” listed above, and/or write a diary for the PDH blog! Just write to Rachel Orange after “registering” with our blog (http://pd-hawaii.com/blog/wp-login.php?action=register ) to get access to our WordPress dashboard.
