Here is a list of issues raised at this mornings session, as well as the initials of those who expressed a desire to work on each reso:

Governmental Operations and National/International Affairs
April 26, 2008 Issues for Hawai‘i State Democratic Convention

1. Oppose pre-emptive action against Iran; support diplomacy instead. (No expansion of the theater of operations into Iran.) (JB, BP, CH, DP, TD, CC)

2. Even handed policy toward Israel and Palestine. (NK, CH, JB, BP, BD)

3. Educate voters about our current constitution, to promote informed choices about Con-Con. (NL, DP, BD, BS, GB)

4. Closed vs. open primary. (DP, BD, CH)

5. Protecting citizens’ rights to dissent and privacy against intrusions by the Patriot Act provisions and Homeland Security. (NK, CC, CH, BS, GB)

6. Expand voter owned elections beyond the Hawai‘i Island County Council. (NL, DP, BP)

7. Ban corporate donations to candidates for office in Hawaii. (NL, DP, BP)

8. Same day voter registration. (NL, DP, BP)

9. Support for civil unions—marriage equality. (DP, TD, BP Resolution already written.)

10. Require Legislators who identify themselves as Democrats and who chair committees (or are Speaker of the House or President of the Senate) to step aside when they oppose legislation to implement Democratic Party resolutions and Platform Planks rather than using their position to block such legislation. (CH, DP, GB)

-------------------
Other issues mentioned that belong in other committees: Tax credits for bike commuters, universal single-payer health care (don’t discriminate in Medicare on the basis of age), housing for the homeless and low and moderate income people.
