Coffee’s replacement
is Cynthia Thielen!!
I think that is a very interesting choice and will make for a lively campaign. My sense is that Thielen is liked by people in many factions across the aisle. hmmm.

My mom needs your vote
Yes, I’m a Democrat and my mom’s a Republican. But mom trumps party. So on with the story: This past Friday evening I got home from work and was looking forward to my first minimal work weekend in a long

Sorry, David.
While “mom trumps party” quite naturally in YOUR thinking, your mom is not my mom, so the “trump” doesn’t hold quite as much power forme. Unless I’m wrong, none of the other visitors to this blog share the same mom with you either.
Above and beyond Senator Akaka’s merits, this election has to be viewed in the context of the nationwide effort of Democrats and Republicans locked in a tight battle to take conttrol of the Senate. If the Hawaii seat would provide the margin for either Party to take control, and it might, it would be suicidal for any progressive Democrat to vote for your mom over ANY Democrat.
Your mom’s concerns for reproductive rights, the environment, renewable energy and, perversely enough, even ANWR, would all suffer if the GOP continues to control the US Senate. If the Democrats take control of the Senate, the agenda will no longer be set by the Trent Lotts, Bill Frists, or whichever GOP gauleiter they would come up with.
This basic, unalterable reality trumps your mom, no matter how good her personal intentions might be.
Good luck to you and your family in all the other aspects of your lives. But on this one, no thanks.
